Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) is a K-12, school-wide intervention designed to address the need for student safety in schools, consistent and fair discipline, and positive student behavior. Based in behavioral and social-ecological theories, it emphasizes systems-change processes for the entire school.
Key features of PBIS:
Effective core academic curriculum
School-wide social skills teaching
Teaching of school behavior expectations
Effective classroom management by teachers
Active supervision and monitoring in common areas of the schools (cafeteria, halls)
Positive reinforcement systems
Firm, fair corrective response to problem behavior
Community service learning
The PBIS mission:
To use a proactive, systems approach to establish the behavioral supports and social culture needed for all students in a school to achieve social, emotional, and academic success.
To develop support systems and sustained implementation of a data-driven, problem-solving model in schools to help students become socially-skilled learners.
To support positive desired behaviors, and to make problem behaviors less effective, efficient, and relevant.
Core program components to support student outcomes include:
Clearly communicated expectations and goals.
Consistent, positive reinforcement for appropriate behaviors school-wide.
Focus on simultaneous development of student competencies in academic and social-emotional domains.
