I Can Problem Solve

An intervention focused on developing students’ problem solving skills.

I Can Problem Solve (ICPS) is a lesson-based program designed to help students develop their interpersonal and cognitive problem-solving skills. With 59-83 lessons per grade, this curriculum is presented in the form of games, role plays, puppets, etc. Specific skill building includes:

  • Pre-problem-solving vocabulary and skills

  • Identifying feelings in self and others

  • Developing alternative solutions

  • Use of consequential thinking

  • Means-end thinking


According to the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL), two randomized control trials (RCTs) published in 2002 with PreK-1st grade students found increased positive social behavior and reduced conduct problems.
