The 4Rs (Reading, Writing, Respect, & Resolution) Program, developed by the Morningside Center for Teaching Social Responsibility, is an interactive, integrated social-emotional learning and language arts curriculum that uses children's literature as a springboard for the lessons.
The program involves weekly lessons in which teachers engage students in reading, writing, discussion, and skills practice aimed at fostering caring, responsible behavior, including:
Building community
Understanding and handling feelings
Listening
Assertiveness
Problem-solving
Diversity
Cooperation
According to the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL), two randomized control trials (RCTs) published in 2010 and 2011 with 3rd and 4th grade students found improved academic performance, increased positive social behavior, reduced conduct problems, and reduced emotional distress.
